Artist Statement
Through the world of photography, I began to observe my family unit and the cultural gaps in the surroundings. As I grew older, the conflict that began to form between my own values and my family’s, empowered my deepening to experience the difference between different worldviews, questions e.g. “what is appropriate and what is not?”, and their impact on my personal life and art.
In my works there is a dialogue between identities, generations and genders, I examine conventions and social norms that have been neglected or shaped by “Israeli culture” over the years. Holds on to memories, photographs, and objects from the 1990s post-Soviet “aliyah” (immigration to Israel). By using personal and collective archival materials such as documents, objects and cultural motifs, I create staged scenes and acts in various editing techniques that lean on the seam between comedy and tragedy. Through the connection, a sensory flood is created which offers observation of a new kind of reality. Boundaries get blurry between mediums and spaces through examining the standards of culture, time, and family.
For me, art is a means of challenging the viewer’s conception of reality and developing an ironic and playful language with a critical observation of life.
